The elements categorized under the theme of respect are:

digital access

regarded by many as the most fundamental element to be a digital citizen (Without access, there is no digital citizenship). Digital access should be available to all. Technology users need to be aware that not everyone has the opportunity to use and access digital devices. Advocating for equal digital rights and supporting initiatives which gives people electronic access is the steps that need to be taken in order to achieve total digital inclusion. To be productive citizens, its should be made certain that no one is denied digital access as digital exclusion makes it difficult as a society (Digital citizenship)

digital etiquette

People do not learn digital etiquette before they start using digital devices. Many technology users see this as the most pressing problem when dealing with digital citizenship. Rules and regulations are required to govern the use of these digital platforms. Inappropriate behaviour often go hand in hand with digital devices since etiquette is often disregarded, rules and policies aren’t enough, we need to teach everyone about appropriate conduct and how to be responsible digital citizens in society.

digital law

This refers to the ethics of technology within a society. As citizens, we are governed by laws that apply to our behaviour and interactions, laws such as no stealing, plagiarism and abusing others. Behaviour such as hacking into others information, downloading illegal music, plagiarizing, creating destructive worms, viruses or creating Trojan Horses, sending spam, or stealing anyone’s identify or property is unethical. In this digital age, many intellectual information laws are violated, copyright infringements and trademark abuse. The enormous nature of the digital world makes it difficult to police. Therefore, as digital citizens, we must be vigilant in reporting illegal behaviour and must only engage in behaviour that is above reproach.

digital communication

Digital communication is one of the elements of digital citizenship which is widely used and appreciated. With so many digital communication methods such as email, instant messaging platforms and utilizing cellular phones, keeping in touch and sharing information through communication have never been this simple. It is also of vital importance that we don’t forget to communicate in person (face to face) as communication digital continues to grow. It’s better to use the digital channels of communication to enhance the ability to communicate, but not to replace human interactions.

digital literacy

It is our responsibility as digital citizens to develop and continually enhance our technological knowledge. It is of at most importance that we support and encourage the acquisition of technological knowledge by members of the community and researchers. The proactive and positive use of technology for good causes such as personal and professional growth as well as well as educational purposes should be modeled and promoted.

digital commerce

A large share of market economy is being done electronically. Legitimate and legal exchanges are occurring, but the buyer or seller needs to be aware of the issues associated with it. People encouraged by digital citizenship to embrace digital commerce and continue to strive for safe and secure utilization of shopping, banking, and engaging in other commercial transactions in technical venues. It is important that we learn how to be effective consumers in this new digital

digital rights and responsibilities

Similar to constitutions of nearly every country, digital citizens also have the right to privacy and free speech. Basic digital rights must be addressed, discussed, and understood in the digital world, with these rights also come responsibilities as well. Users must help in ensuring that the technology is used in an appropriate manner. In a digital society these two areas must work together for everyone to be productive. Know how to protect your information from outside forces that might cause harm.

Security

Digital security is essentially protecting yourself in the digital world, this includes protecting your identity, your data, your money. This simply means that citizens must take measures to be safe by practicing Backing up data regularly, creating strong passwords and changing passwords regularly and being aware of internet scams and not sharing information with anyone that you don't know.

digital health and wellness

Physical issues such as eye safety, repetitive stress syndrome, obesity and sound ergonomic practices and psychological issues that are becoming more prevalent such as Internet addiction, cyberbullying and online predators are issues that need to be addressed in a new technological world. The dangers of technology should also be addressed and understood. Digital Citizenship includes a culture where technology users are taught how to protect themselves through education and training. Balance between the online world and real world should be achieved
